I accidentally became a potter.
I had always been curious about working with clay. One day I decided to take a pottery lesson with a friend. Little did I know at the time a sensory love affair started that day.
My first pieces out of the kiln thrilled me. It was the magical transition of the glaze from the firing that got me. Though looking back at those pieces, I am not sure what gave me hope!
I really had no idea what I was doing. But something lit a fire in me, and it was not the flames of raku!
Have you thought about your dreams lately? Do you still have dreams? In life before pandemic, one of my dreams was to have my first solo pottery exhibition, and thanks to the Oxford Riverside Gallery, and a lot of hard work, I was able to make that happen!

Yes, COVID-19 has set some things back (and also some things forward), but regardless, I hope you will continue to join me on my journey as I refine my craft and continue to reach for more dreams.
Was it a coincidence that in my small rural part of the world I was able to find a pottery class to attend? To me, it was meant to be! And the best is yet to come!

I love you story and I certainly can identify with it. I had ceramic classes and therefore the experience of creating, working with clay and I fell in love with it! But have not worked in clay since. Thomas my late husband, such a silly sounding statement. Late for what? He had wanted to begin working with clay again as well, we just need a kiln.
Sorry to hear about Thomas, but happy to hear you both connected over clay! We were able to find second hand kilns on kijiji and facebook marketplace. The hardest part is learning the maintenance, so what can also be nice is renting kiln space in another pottery studios kiln for a firing.

That you discovered a passion for pottery by accident is surprising and fortunate. I can see from some of your posts how the process of pottery making could be exciting and addicting. Flying is a passion I’ve had since childhood — which is still ongoing some would say. 😄
Wonderful! I hope you may be flying today! I feel like the things we were drawn into when young are things that are likely to resonate as we get older as well. I know both artwork and spending time in nature was like that for me 🙏
I fell in love with the world of art at a young age. I picked up a pencil and began drawing. No classes, no teacher, I just worked and worked to progress. I always wanted to be great enough to do an art show but things happen and time passes.
I love your work.And yes, I do still draw. It’s my go to when I need a break.

I used to dream of recognition from the art world. I could be rich and famous, but now I think fame would make me nervous. People would be after me. Now I’m happy to be left alone to do art and no one is bugging me. Unknown is more free. It’s not my doom it’s my destiny.
I once heard a blessing of “May you be able to create art without an audience” which I think is wonderful, and also tricky as I get the pottery studio off the ground of course 🙂 I like how you changed your mindset 🙏

That was a happy accident!
It absolutely was and one that I was thinking of yesterday hiking in the woods. If we dont first get lost we cant find out where we are supposed to be going. And yes, I did get lost in the forest for a bit but found my way back home after discovering some neat new areas I had not seen before. The journey is the destination 🙏
I love your story! I love your pottery. And I love the stories you share, especially the mythology stories. I’ve been writing poetry since I was eight years old. I don’t know why, I just liked doing it. I also danced ballet at the time. I think the two creative expressions built upon one another. At 66 ballet is out of the question, but when I gave up dancing, I took up painting and zentanling. I think the painting helps my poetry and vise versa. Mostly I just enjoy playing around with both.
Play is where the good stuff is. Following what is fun and curious like “I wonder what that would do???” has been very beneficial for my work. I am glad you have painting and zentanling as well 🙏 I hope you are keeping well and creating today, LuAnne!
