Perhaps it is only fitting
That the first piece that I create for my ‘Primythical‘ series would be of the goddess Athena, who in addition to being the goddess of wisdom, also has handicrafts in her portfolio.
What better patron and starting point of this collection could there be?
The first born of Zeus, who emerged from Zeus’ forehead now, thousands of years later, emerges from my studio as the first born of this collection.
From the flames of raku, a goddess emerges:
In Greek Mythology,
A little owl represents or accompanies Athena and has become known as a symbol of knowledge and wisdom in the western world, attesting to the long standing power of the Olympians. The whispers of Athena’s legacy are everywhere.
The symbology of the owl has often inspired my own personal journey. The ability to see through the darkness of life and find knowledge and grow has so inspired me that I have also made a collection of raku owls.

Athena sometimes used her wisdom to trick other Olympians, and in this case with beautiful results.
While making this piece
Athena and her owl have been instilling more creative sparks in my mind and have whispered other ideas to me, so I will be revisiting this goddess as the collection ‘Primythical‘ grows.

My understanding of Athena is poor at best. But she seems to be part of the continuum of humanities search for the feminine side of our humanity. With your owl you capture the jokester in her and us. At least that’s how it works for me.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment. In this piece I have utilized the owl to bring about the playful side of Athena. She sometimes used her wisdom to trick humans, and even other Olympians (like Hera), but usually in the pursuit of good. The ancients knew that the feminine side of humanity had great power!
A lesson we would do well to remember
I don’t know what happened to WordPress but I am having the worst time with it lately. Making comments are almost impossible & creating my own posts have become really hard. I have a free account … is this the reason? To force me into getting a paid account?
I’m not sure. We actually have a paid account. We don’t have a problem making posts, but commenting and seeing other blogs we follow in our reader have been problems we’ve had unfortunately! I hope for us both it was just a temporary glitch!
