Like any skill, raku pottery takes learning and practice
Which means taking a look at old work and learning more about what I like and do not. This helps me to further define my artistic practice.
I was outside this morning taking a look at this vase called Madame Pele’s Flow and taking a few pictures to share with you 🙂
In this piece, I love how the colours almost look like a volcano.
‘Madame Pele’s Flow’ tells the tale of a sometimes beautiful goddess who was right at home in the flames of raku. Not only could she sometimes appear as a beautiful woman, but also a white dog, even an old woman, but also a lava flow.
that is a lot of different things!

If I could transform into anything (temporarily in this case) it would be wind, so I could ruffle people’s hair and clothes and offer vague portents of things to come.

That is exactly what I thought of first, too, April.
I have no idea what I would chose. Maybe a cat, but only temporarily, so I could learn more about them, and be able to help them more from knowing what it’s like at their perspective.
I bet cats would love that you did that too. They are funny creatures 🙂 Have lived with one most of my life and knowing what they think would be fun and hilarious!
This vase is beautiful, but If you get a raku glaze that you don’t like is it possible to fire it again and get another effect? or would that just make a mess in the kiln?
yes it is possible, but to get the glaze to stick take a sneaky trick of using cheap hairspray. Then reglaze and fire again – no guarantees itll turn out better though!

I would be a bird – probably one that migrated to warmer climes. As for madame Pele’s vase – I really like it. I like the change of colour and the feeling of movement.
