Name That Vase – March 2020 Edition

Hello and happy March! Welcome to the month of spring and also to my monthly feature – ‘Name that Vase’.

For those who are new to this feature, ‘Name that Vase’ is where you can suggest a name, create a story, poem or prose for this raku pottery vase. Consider this your chance to be inspired, a writing prompt or a creative cue. You can check out a ‘Name that Vase’ post to see how it works, or if you are feeling nostalgic, you can check out the first ever ‘Name that Vase’ post that started what has now become a monthly tradition for our blog and readers.

This month we have a very special vase for your naming, but first we must congratulate last month’s winner aimeredleaf for their name and poem. Congratulations!

Old Soul

For a time I held you
Though you could not be kept.
The rush of your leaving
Left me cracked in ways that cannot
Be seen.
Do not mourn for me, for I
Know what it is to embrace
The deep where the fear of
Desire resides.

Here is our vase for March:

Please add what you think the name should be for our March vase and any associated poetry or story in the comments below. I look forward to reading all your great ideas.

  1. I would call it Mandevilla. It reminds me of a pale pink flower. The darker lines are like the petals. It’s pretty and reminds me of spring and Easter.

    1. Thanks Angela! I like that name and it goes really well with this vase! You are right in that it has a very spring/Easter feel to it.

    1. You suggestion put a big smile on my face, and I appreciate that in these challenging times. Now you have even more time for movies, since we are all a little more housebound than usual. Thanks for your suggestion. Stay safe and well, wishing you all the best.

    1. The power of three! I am ‘Charmed’! Thanks for your suggestions and participating in Name that Vase. Stay safe and healthy. Wishing you and yours well!

    1. Thank you so much for your comment on this Name that Vase post. It is a beautiful name that you suggested, and I am appreciateyou leaving the interpretation up to the imagination. Stay safe and well!

  2. It’s beautiful, especially with the cracks throughout its very special colour. Reminds me of Kintsugi, but with the black of space instead of gold. The poem is gorgeous as well… the perfect pairing.

I loved what Angela said, about it being like a pale pink flower. Her words reminded me of a bouquet a friend recently gave me from her own garden – it had the most beautiful warmish-pale, earthy pink, star-shaped flowers such as I had not seen before – I asked her what they were; she said they were Hellebore. She then said it was also called “Rose de Noël” (Christmas Rose) since they bear flowers in the depth of winter.
So I would choose Hellebore. It’s a flower that looks very fragile and delicate, yet is strong enough to bloom in the most difficult conditions.

I love the name that you have suggested and of course the explanation you have provided. It feels like a poignant metaphor, because these times with all that is going on certainly seems like a metaphorical winter. We need more flowers during these dark days.

Wishing you and yours good health. Stay safe and well!

  4. Other commenters have already come up with wonderful names, but the title of your poem, “Old Soul.” made me think of my own name, Priscilla, which means ancient one or old one. (Whether or not it’s a good name for a vase, I wouldn’t know.) I had a visceral reaction when I saw the close up, too. Beautiful.

    1. That is very interesting. I did not know the meaning of the name Priscilla, but it has a beautiful meaning! I think it would make an excellent name for a vase, which in some ways is as old as the Earth it’s self! Thank you for your kind comment. Stay safe and healthy!

  5. The winner’s poem is a beautiful one. I name this one “pourpre”

    boundaries are those
    who never know
    where conflict begins
    wealth ends…

but you who sit in splendor can
    overlook
    it
    all.

    1. Thank you for your kind comment, and I am glad you enjoyed last month’s selection. So many talented people makes it hard to choose!

  7. Observing the “cracks”. I imagine

    Birth

    ’tis a Mystery
    shouldering inside her shell
    ready to hatch
    into th’ Enigma
    of whatever’s Outside

    Have a wonderful day.
    Art

  8. Based on our world today, I would like to suggest: Faith, Hope, Charity. I have sincere faith in humankind and my hope is we are all charitable to each other in this CRAZY time.

  9. ” In The Deep ”

” You look at me and you only see me as broken.
You look closer and you wonder how I can even stand tall.
You see only the scars that I wear.
But I am more than what you see on the outside.
Inside ,I am strong. I am held together by the love of another.
Inside, I am whole because I know I am not alone.
If you could see in the deep you would find joy there. “
