Hello and happy March! Welcome to the month of spring and also to my monthly feature – ‘Name that Vase’.
For those who are new to this feature, ‘Name that Vase’ is where you can suggest a name, create a story, poem or prose for this raku pottery vase. Consider this your chance to be inspired, a writing prompt or a creative cue. This month we have a very special vase for your naming, but first we must congratulate last month’s winner aimeredleaf for their name and poem. Congratulations!
Old Soul
For a time I held you
Though you could not be kept.
The rush of your leaving
Left me cracked in ways that cannot
Be seen.
Do not mourn for me, for I
Know what it is to embrace
The deep where the fear of
Desire resides.

I will just give it a name “The womb”

I would call it Mandevilla. It reminds me of a pale pink flower. The darker lines are like the petals. It’s pretty and reminds me of spring and Easter.

It’s beautiful, especially with the cracks throughout its very special colour. Reminds me of Kintsugi, but with the black of space instead of gold. The poem is gorgeous as well… the perfect pairing.
I loved what Angela said, about it being like a pale pink flower. Her words reminded me of a bouquet a friend recently gave me from her own garden – it had the most beautiful warmish-pale, earthy pink, star-shaped flowers such as I had not seen before – I asked her what they were; she said they were Hellebore. She then said it was also called “Rose de Noël” (Christmas Rose) since they bear flowers in the depth of winter.
So I would choose Hellebore. It’s a flower that looks very fragile and delicate, yet is strong enough to bloom in the most difficult conditions.

I love the name that you have suggested and of course the explanation you have provided. It feels like a poignant metaphor, because these times with all that is going on certainly seems like a metaphorical winter. We need more flowers during these dark days.

Other commenters have already come up with wonderful names, but the title of your poem, “Old Soul.” made me think of my own name, Priscilla, which means ancient one or old one. (Whether or not it’s a good name for a vase, I wouldn’t know.) I had a visceral reaction when I saw the close up, too. Beautiful.
