Name That Vase – November Edition

Welcome to my monthly feature – ‘Name that Vase’.

For those who are new to this feature, ‘Name that Vase’ is where you can suggest a name, create a story, poem or prose for this raku pottery vase. Consider this your chance to be inspired, a writing prompt or a creative cue. You can check out a ‘Name that Vase’ post to see how it works, or if you are feeling nostalgic, you can check out the first ever ‘Name that Vase’ post that started what has now become a monthly tradition for our blog and readers.

November’s ‘Name That Vase’

Our vase for this month, with it’s greens and coppery reds might evoke Christmas for some, or perhaps the alien lizard queen Diana from the 1980’s miniseries ‘V’.

We will announce the name and writing for this now nameless vase in December! We look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with! So feel free to add your contribution in the comments below! You can check out more vase stories here by clicking on the images of the raku vases on the page.

Don’t forget to subscribe to our newsletter so you don’t miss out on knowing which name we have chosen for the vase and to keep up to date on other happenings in the studio!

    1. Thank you so much for sharing your name idea. I hope you are well and have a good weekend.

    1. I can see why you would think that for this piece! I just posted one of my vases and stories this morning 😉 I hope you are doing well and have a great weekend ahead. I sent the book off to print yesterday after some back and forth with the printer. Very excited!

      1. Yes I saw that. I’m pretty hopeless at myhology, I recognise some of the names, but no more. Always good to have a tiny lesson. The Greeks and Romans certainly had bronze, so copper must have been known, and presumably, verdigris, so maybe there is a mythological link? You have an excellent weekend, too.

      2. I am going to have to see if there is a mythological link or story with verdigris, maybe do a little research, so don’t be surprised if you see a story along those lines 😉

    1. haha! There is a vase or two that I should have named Jungle Volcano! Thank you for the morning laugh … went will with my coffee! I hope your weekend is off to a great start!

    1. Interesting! I had not considered that association, but I can totally see it now that you mention it! I hope your weekend is starting well!

  1. I see copper and verdigris. I see bubble patterns on the side… I imagine a salamander living in the base of it, in water or creeping out into a copper and gold leaf litter with mossy trunk above? ‘SALAMANDER’ is what I would name it…

    1. Very interesting. I had to take another look at the piece. I love that you saw something I initially did not. One of the reasons why I love ‘Name that Vase’. Thank you so much for sharing your name idea for this piece!

  2. This might be my favorite piece of yours yet! My favorite color is green, so I might be a little jaded ;). A more playful piece protruded from my grasp when I saw this vase…so here goes!

    GOBLIN CHILD
    11/15/19

    Little trinkets,
    Swollen belly.
    Your copper tone
    Draws me in
    Distracts me from
    What’s within.
    Growing up
    You’re breaking out
    Turning green
    Around your snout.
    You’ve made your point
    Let’s work this out.

Thank you, as always, for providing such neat inspiration! DoRee

    1. Thank you so much for your kind comment and I love the playful piece you have written. Green is also one of my favourite colours too Doree! I might be a little jaded too (yup I saw what you did there! ;-). I have been making teeny tiny vases for fun, so I may have to send you a green one with your book 😉 Hope your weekend is off to a good start 😉

      1. You’re welcome :), I’m so glad you enjoyed goblin child. I love tiny vases and I would absolutely be honored to receive a green (or any color) one of yours ♥️!! I’m super excited to get your book, and hope you have a great weekend too.

    1. You know what? It will be extremely challenging for me to not pick this name. Just no blender jokes associated with this name 😉 The muppets were a big part of my childhood. I hope you have a great weekend and thanks for your nostalgic name suggestion!

    1. Danaus would approve of your name and I love the sentiment behind it! I hope your weekend is going great so far! Thanks for your commenting!

  3. Metamorphosis

    What is it that changes
    When we transform?
    What bubbles up from the
    depths of our soul?
Is what rises to the top
    What we should choose
Or what we should let go?
I think I choose to let go
To see how far my soul can rise.

    1. Thank you so much Maggie for the beautiful inspirational name and verse. Transformation and change are such an epic and important part of life and I love the philosophy that you express in your words. May you have a soul soaring weekend!

      1. I don’t know if you can relate, but I often feel like I am in the midst of transformation. Makes for a great journey!

  4. Gertrude Bell, the queen of the desert, was leading her caravan to the next tribe on her map. She stoped in a oasis. A prince, Kobe, also happened to have stoped by there for the night . Star struck by this beautiful courageous woman, with auburn hair and green eyes, he asked the alchemist in town if he could make something special for her, that she will carry and remember him. The alchemist did, it was a vase….a vase in the color of her hair and eyes. He called the vase Gertrude, because it represented her beauty , her resilience , her brilliance .
And …this is a story I made up, but Gertrude Bell was real, she was beautiful , courageous and special .

    1. What a beautiful name and story! Sorry I had not gotten to your comment earlier, sometimes wordpress does weird things, but I did get your email and that got me to take a closer look for it. I love that you have associated this vase with Gertrude Bell and your story is so lovely and I love all of the elements you have interwoven. She was an incredible and formidable person. I just noticed there is a movie about her. I had only read about her in the past. Thank you for participating and I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

      1. Your work is beautiful and inspiring 🌸, you too , have a lovely weekend .

  5. I’m thinking “Ares” or “Mars “- the reddish portions look like the rusty surface of the planet named for the God of War – esp w/ the craters. The green could b the alien sky 🤗👽 Tres jolie combinaison de couleurs.

    1. I can totally see the Mars/Ares reference and you are right, the surface looks like Mars in parts, and the alien sky reference of the green is on point. I have another vase I called Mars, which is a red rust. I do see the alien landscape in this one. Thank you for being a part of Name that Vase!

  6. I think my story didn’t go through , I must. had pushed the wrong button .
    The vase …..

Starstruck by this beautiful courageous woman, with auburn hair and green eyes, he asked the alchemist in town if he could make something special for her. Something that he would give her as a gift, a gift to remember him by. The alchemist did, it was a vase….a vase in the color of her hair and eyes. He called the vase Gertrude, because it represented her beauty , her resilience , her brilliance .

  7. My name for it is Dara – From the Irish Mac Dara, which means “oak tree”. This was the name of a 6th-century saint from Connemara. It is also used as an Anglicized form of DÁIRE.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

    Autumn rays…
    Warmth in colors hues
    Captured by hand
    Shared through all seasons

  9. From The Grass Down

The grass is green, but the ground is not.
The ground is born brown and grows browner the further down you go.
    Layers of brown.
    Warming brown.
Deep down into the earth below.
