Today’s vase, ‘Gossip Girl’ pays tribute to a nymph renowned for her beauty named Larunda. Larunda was also known for another trait. She talked a lot. Her parents, try as they might, could not curb this trait and her love of gossip.

As seen at my recent art exhibit ‘The Myth of Family’
Jupiter would provide an answer to solve this dilemma.
During one of her many gossip sessions, Larunda could not hang onto a very juicy tidbit of information. She ended up revealing Jupiter’s affair with fellow nympth Juturna to Jupiter’s wife Juno. She could not keep such a juicy tidbit of information to herself. So much for the girl code.
That proved to be a very bad idea. Jupiter was king of the gods in Rome. You mess with Jupiter, you better don’t mess with Jupiter.
His answer? Cut out her tongue and order her escorted by Mercury to Avernus, the gateway to the underworld. Extreme perhaps, but effective.
You can see more images of the raku pottery vase ‘Gossip Girl’ here.
Our story does not end here. You know the pretty people who can talk their way out of a speeding ticket? Even without her tongue Larunda managed to weasel her way out of the trip to the Underworld. Mercury fell in love with her, they made love and she had two babies.
It was a real labour for her to avoid the Underworld. Literally!
To keep herself safe, she had to remain hidden in a cottage in the woods. That combined without having a tongue, may have been a worse punishment than a trip to the Underworld.
It’s a good thing there was no Facebook or WIFI back then! Larunda might have lost her fingers too.
I also have some exciting news! A very dear friend and talented artist I know has joined us here on wordpress! She is looking for other artists and creatives to connect with. You can say hello and check out her site here.
Let me know what you thought of my vase ‘Gossip Girl’? Have you ever known someone like Larunda? What do you do when confronted with gossip? You can check out more of my raku vases here, and their stories!
Thank you for the shout out, Love! Looking forward to connecting with all the great people here!
My pleasure. You are so talented and have so much creativity to offer 😉
I love this story and I love how each vase has a name and a backstory! Brilliant.
Thank you so much for your very kind comment! I hope you are having a great week!
Poor woman! At least she escaped the underworld x
Indeed! At least she had that small mercy.
👍
Love the coppery – almost mirror finish on this one 👍👍
Thank you! I am enjoying playing with glazes to get more pieces with the mirror like finish. I hope you are keeping cool,
Unfortunately not- even with the ac it’s hot. It should b more seasonable by this weekend though 🤞🙂
Fingers crossed for you!
The Change over should happen tonite- then NORMAL fall weather fur the next week or so! 🙏🙏🙏 I think we hit 95 today 🥵
That is great to hear. What a relief for you! 95 in October … I can’t imagine that. We have been close to having frost the last few nights here. Enjoy the relief!
I am- what a change a few hours can make ! 😃😃😃
Lovely story and pottery 😊❤
Pottery and love always go together!
Dig this much. An empty, idle vessel contains infinite potential, even if currently engages in inane blahblahblah. The shape, colour, and degree of opaqueness makes the sobriquet just lovely and giggle provoking. Glad you make and share .
haha! I loved your comment which literally made me laugh with my morning coffee. Thank you for the smiles and the kind comment you made. I appreciate you. I hope you are having a great week so far!
Beautiful vase! and a very interesting myth and story…
Thank you so much for your very kind comment Francisco! I hope you are having a wonderful week so far!
Lovely week now that I am back home in Spain! Thank you! Hope you’ve a lovely week as well
Spain is such a beautiful country to visit. I remember my trip many moons ago to Barcelona and Ibiza quite fondly!
Yes, Spain has many lovely places, Barcelona is a beautiful city and if you travel the Mediterranean coast south you will discover incredible places along the water to the east and the mountains to the west. Cheers!
Hopefully one day I shall have the opportunity to go back and see those places! Thanks!
no point in talkign about others while you can talk about yourself and what you want to do/ build with others for a utopia
I 100 percent agree with this comment. Focus on the positive things that are uplifting to speak about and all the good that we can do in the world! I hope you are well and thank you for such a beautiful comment!
I love the stories behind your creations because it gives your work that much more meaning. Yes, I have known a few gossips in my day. You know, what goes around comes around and gossips usually get caught up in their own blather.
Amen! A few times I have observed people get caught in their own web. Unfortunately the damage they do before that can be disheartening to those involved. Hope you are doing well – sending good vibes from Canada!
Thank you for the good vibes and please send some cooler weather our way.
If only I had such power, believe me I would take the edge off of our cooler temperatures and send that cooling air to you!
😀🌨
This is a very interesting post; but then again, you probably already know this. 🙂
Thanks Robert. I hope you have a great day.
Going good so far, thanks. You too. 🙂
Love your creations and the stories behind them 🥰😍
Thank you so much for your kind words! I hope you have a great day ahead!
Interesting
I’ve never heard of Larunda before. Losing her tongue sounds like a sad fate. As always, I love the patterns on the vase.
It is a sad fate indeed. The ancient gods of mythology were often cruel figures. Thanks for your kind comment on the vase and I hope you have a lovely day!
This is something, Julanda and Júpiter, that is gossip.
I know that the less I talk the less I get in trouble, they teach that at school at 3 years old, and if not gon to school you learn it even earlier, if you are smart, but I do know human nature so gossip is not in me but in most other humans, weird humans…….
Thanks for yoru comment. I was always told we have two ears and one mouth so we should listen twice as much as we talk. Sometimes I think it best to talk even less than that 😉 I hope you had a great weekend!
I did have a great weekend and now….monday! Time to go to work with a 🙂
Hope you too had a great weekend and even better a great week comming.
Thanks Charly! Its been a good and productive week so far 😉
