Name that Vase! Here is where you can suggest a name, create a story, poem or prose for this raku pottery vase. Consider this your chance to be inspired, a writing prompt or a creative cue. You can check out our last ‘Name that Vase’ post to see how it works, or if you are feeling nostalgic, you can check out the first ever ‘Name that Vase’ post that started what has now become a monthly tradition for our blog and readers.

Last month, everyone was a winner for the ‘Name that Vase’ post! My intention was to feature one story with the vase at my upcoming art exhibit.
I liked so many of your wonderful submissions that I wanted them all to be featured at my first solo art exhibit, ‘The Myth of Family’ at the Oxford Riverside Gallery. The vase was featured at the show with a print out of all your ideas and also a QR code directing attendees to the ‘Name that Vase’ blog post for August. One of the organizers of a local poetry festival was in attendance, and for their festival I will be designating a vase for them to name too.

That’s a great vase! I would say a potential name would be Martian or Firebrand.

Just an add as to why Vesta was my suggested name. She was a divinity of fire, hearth and home. The poem says the rest, I hope.
It is a lovely poem, and I will let you in on a little secret. There is an upcoming vase story/myth with the same inspiration 😉

Beautiful as they usually are! First name that came to mind, Phaethon, son of the sun, who asked his father to prove his parentage by letting him fly his chariot, of course his father begged and pleaded that he take back his request, however, since he told the kid he’d do whatever asked he had to give in and of course disaster ensues, leaving the earth in a fiery blaze, covering the sky in cloud of smoke and flame. And of course in the aftermath a constellation is born…
Unexpected Life
To rise each day and bless my body which

I can see the alien eyes or a praying mantis face in this one . If you want to go in a less spooky direction it also reminds me of the thunderstorm lit up in the distance by the last rays of the setting sun yesterday evening – it was quite a scene- like a red jellyfish pulsating with feathery lightning bolts against an inky blue sky. Hmmm- “Stormy After-light”

As morbid as it sounds, I see “Sea of Blood.” I see the aftermath of doom; a cloud of blood-red swirling tragically in the deep blue sea. A beautiful vase, but there is a strange scariness to it.
