Name that Vase – September Edition

Those of you who are new to my blog, might be wondering what is a ‘Name that Vase’ post. I am asking any of you talented writers, poets or dreamers out there who may be interested to …

Name that Vase! Here is where you can suggest a name, create a story, poem or prose for this raku pottery vase. Consider this your chance to be inspired, a writing prompt or a creative cue. You can check out our last ‘Name that Vase’ post to see how it works, or if you are feeling nostalgic, you can check out the first ever ‘Name that Vase’ post that started what has now become a monthly tradition for our blog and readers.

In October, we will announce the name and writing for this now nameless vase! We look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with! So feel free to add your contribution in the comments below! You can check out more vase stories here by clicking on the images of the raku vases on the page.

Last month, everyone was a winner for the ‘Name that Vase’ post! My intention was to feature one story with the vase at my upcoming art exhibit.

I liked so many of your wonderful submissions that I wanted them all to be featured at my first solo art exhibit, ‘The Myth of Family’ at the Oxford Riverside Gallery. The vase was featured at the show with a print out of all your ideas and also a QR code directing attendees to the ‘Name that Vase’ blog post for August. One of the organizers of a local poetry festival was in attendance, and for their festival I will be designating a vase for them to name too.

August’s ‘Name that Vase’ displayed at the Oxford Riverside Gallery.

Thanks to all who participate in our ‘Name that Vase’ posts! It is wonderful to read the creative and beautiful names and writing that you come up with!

    1. Thanks Debbie! I love the name and the fact that it actually made me think of E.T. from movie fame 😉 I hope you are having a great week!

    1. haha! Could be 😉 We watched the new It movie last night, so I am feeling your horror movie watching vibe 😉 I hope you are doing well Nova!

      1. I watched the first chapter recently. LoL I’m doin ok:) Thanks for the well wishes! I hope you’re feeling more like yourself!

  1. Here’s my offering for a name and a poem. Thanks for the inspiration.

    Vesta

I hold a flame inside my womb,
    Electric, Cinnabar flight rouge,
    Mercurial, gaseous blue
    Where flowers may bloom;
    I am the elements combined;
Fire in water, wind and time,
    Earth in human, all entwined,
I am the blaze that never burns,
I am the unseen hand that turns,
    Where I dwell; hold; keep; sojourn;
You will know this space as home.

    Antonia Sara Zenkevitch

    1. Just an add as to why Vesta was my suggested name. She was a divinity of fire, hearth and home. The poem says the rest, I hope.

      1. It is a lovely poem, and I will let you in on a little secret. There is an upcoming vase story/myth with the same inspiration 😉

  2. Beautiful as they usually are! First name that came to mind, Phaethon, son of the sun, who asked his father to prove his parentage by letting him fly his chariot, of course his father begged and pleaded that he take back his request, however, since he told the kid he’d do whatever asked he had to give in and of course disaster ensues, leaving the earth in a fiery blaze, covering the sky in cloud of smoke and flame. And of course in the aftermath a constellation is born…

  3. Unexpected Life

To rise each day and bless my body which
    Rests within transcendent soul
And bless the shadow of my death which
Reveals the contours of my journey, the
Contrast with bright breath and searing love
Bringing texture to my tumultuous, terrific
    Unexpected life

    1. Can I hold onto that Alyson? I am writing a second book about death and you get to the heart of something in your beautiful poem?. If it works I would contact you for permission and details for referencing.

  4. I can see the alien eyes or a praying mantis face in this one . If you want to go in a less spooky direction it also reminds me of the thunderstorm lit up in the distance by the last rays of the setting sun yesterday evening – it was quite a scene- like a red jellyfish pulsating with feathery lightning bolts against an inky blue sky. Hmmm- “Stormy After-light”

    1. You have a way with words in your descriptions MJ! I can totally see the alien eyes in the vase too and the thunderstorm reference. Thanks for sharing your impressions and I hope you are having a great day!

      1. I was trying to think of other terms for sundown/ almost night- I’m not sure if “afterlight” is a real word. Vespers? Magic hour? Eventide? All of those sound nice 🙂

    1. Cues up the song ‘We are the Champions’ 😉 Thank you so much for your suggestion for this edition of ‘Name that Vase’ and your kind comment. It is my pleasure to read your blog 😉 I hope this week is off to a wonderful start for you!

    Deep and dark
    I can almost see you
    But you’re hiding within,
    Not open
    To be seen.
    Concealed
    And contented.
    Where you are,
    Eventually striving for the light
    So afar.

    1. Thank you Doree! I love where you went with this piece and your poem, which from perspective has a few layers of meaning. It really resonates with me for this piece! I hope you are doing very well!

  6. The Wrath of Beauty

    Stormed intensity
    Wagers against normalcy
    Eruption of creativity
    Formed of raw intensity
    Fire dwelling from soul
    Escaped emotion’s tortured plea
    Memories evoking artistry

    1. Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful prose and your idea for a name. I love the imagery and it captures something from within the vase and the story of the vase. I hope you are having a wonderful day!

      1. Thank you ♥️ I hope your day is great, I would say fabulous but with everything you are going through I’m sure fabulous wouldn’t be accurate description.

      2. Thanks Taylor! I am pretty open to it being fabulous, and I know I will get there. Thank you so much for your kindness!!!

  7. Here is my first ever entry to “Name that Vase”. Such fun! Thanks for a great way to prompt people. I always enjoy reading not only your blog but the creative things people come up with for Name that Vase.

    “Beating Heart”

    By Jane Tawel

Is the blood that beats inside us all,
A result of Heaven, or result of The Fall?
Does my blood run red, or does it run blue?
And what of the blood that throbs within you?
If I could catch a beating heart,
Then that might be at least a good start,
To understand that what pulses in me,
Is perhaps the world’s greatest mystery.

    1. Thank you so much Jane for your kind words and for sharing your beautiful verse. I love that you are contemplating the mystery within us all and pondering such questions and have picked up on the inner and outer qualities of the vase 😉
I hope you are having a wonderful week so far!

  8. As morbid as it sounds, I see “Sea of Blood.” I see the aftermath of doom; a cloud of blood-red swirling tragically in the deep blue sea. A beautiful vase, but there is a strange scariness to it.

    1. Thank you Jacquelyn for sharing your impressions. It is interesting that you should say that, I did have the impression that there was something slightly foreboding about this particular piece and your idea for a name captures that. I hope you are having a great week so far!

    1. Thank you so much for your kind comment and I love that you capture the texture right in the name. Your words are nothing short of magical in the context of this piece! It really evokes not only the vase it’s self, but it’s creation! I hope you are having a great day!

      1. Thank you so much! Your praise means the world to me! I love the vase, and if I think that if I wasn’t on such a tight budget of late, I would love to buy it. Have a lovely rest of the day!

    1. Thanks for participating Terri! I love the name as it speaks to part of the creation process for the piece. I am glad so far this piece remains intact 😉 I hope your day is off to a great start!

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words Sharon. They mean a lot to me and I appreciate your wonderful suggestion for a name for this piece.

  9. Like another of your viewers, I also say dark eyes peering out…so I’d called “Inner Vision” or “Inner Reflection”…Shellie

    1. Thank you so much for your name idea Shellie 😉 I see those eyes too! I hope your week is off to a great start!
