Name That Vase – August Edition

Those of you who are new to my blog, might be wondering what is a ‘Name that Vase’ post. I am asking any of you talented writers, poets or dreamers out there who may be interested to ….

Name that Vase! Here is where you can suggest a name, create a story, poem or prose for this raku pottery vase. Consider this your chance to be inspired, a writing prompt or a creative cue. And this month, the chosen name and associated writing will be unveiled at my upcoming art show that opens at the end of this month! You can check out our last ‘Name that Vase’ post to see how it works, or if you are feeling nostalgic, you can check out the first ever ‘Name that Vase’ post that started what has now become a monthly tradition for our blog and readers.

This vase is looking for a name. What would you call it?

This month ‘Name that Vase’ will be a little bit different, as I am asking people to submit their names for this vase and a story or poem that is consistent with the theme of the show, which will be called ‘The Myth of Family’. This show will explore the idea of family from a spiritual, cultural and emotional perspective through stories inspired by pottery pieces. Many of the pieces are based on various mythological stories that highlight family relationships, but feel free to add your own personal twist. Will your name and associated writing reference a famous myth of days forgotten or have a modern or personal twist. You decide!

We look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with! So feel free to add your contribution in the comments below! You can check out more vase stories here by clicking on the images of the raku vases on the page.

Be sure to keep an eye out for more posts about the upcoming art show and some special ways you can be involved and participate.

  2. Smile gently
    on my ephemeral beauty –
    Opalescent,
    Pearlescent,
    Curves.
    Reflect on the quiet
    smoothness
    of my graciously rounded body,
and think to dip your toe
    in the cool water within.

    Grace.

  3. Danae mother of Perseus. An empty vessel used by the Gods.

    DANAE

    Shiny and
    silver and cold,
    So cold.
    Who are you?
    Steep with a narrow mind
    Beauty exuding
    To the naked eye.
    But your heart is fading,
    Never fully told.

    1. Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful poem fit for the gods! You have captured the spirit of what I was looking for in every aspect of this work. I hope you are having a great week.

      2. Thanks Doree! I love the flow of your words. I want you to know that your idea was one of my favourites. I ultimately chose to include the entire blog post at the show, but your story in particular may inspire a vase of it’s own, if you are okay for me using it for inspiration for a new piece. You totally got where I was going with the theme for my show and that makes me smile big!

      3. Thank you, that means so much to me! I think it was a great idea to use the entire blog post in your show, all of your followers write such beautiful things. 4. Morning of The Magicians.

She sensed the inch of dawn at the foot of the door, pinched the thin sheet to her chin and whispered, “Allow the light to prise the morning from the night.”

Slipping through the shadowed meadow, ankle deep in bluebells, he cradled fuel for their fire as the sun began to flower. He heard her in his mind’s eye, “Allow the light…”

    1. Thank you so much for submitting this magical piece! I hope you are having a great day!

    1. That is a beautiful suggestion for a name! Thank you so much. I hope your day is going well!

  5. “Under The Shade of Tree”
That’s what I can imagine cause I’m bad at giving a name. It’s my first time to try this challenge.

    “Under The Shade of Tree”
The silver pot shines so bright
    Made by love and passion
Spending time to make such a beautiful art
    Tired isn’t a problem
As long as I can lean my back under the shade of tree

    1. Thank you so much for your beautiful name suggestion. I love the comfort that the shade of a tree provides and your beautiful words. I hope you are having a great week so far.

  6. I love this idea! Here is my submission for a name.

    Nona

    My grandmother’s wrinkled
    hands
    smooth and soft
    ever moving
    “Nona, whachya doing?”
    she looked up at me
    grey hairs framed her
    blue green eyes
    her soul
    her wisdom
    her loves
    her loss
    all written
    in those eyes
    “Nona?”
She smiled back at me and
    touched my hand
    cool
    warm
    blue
    pink
    new
    old
    She said
    “Hello dear, how are you?”

    1. Thank you so much for your name idea and this beautiful tribute to your grandma (and many grandmothers everywhere). It is hard for me to think of the word grandmother and do anything but smile 😉
I hope your week is off to a wonderful start.

  7. Moonlight Fantasy

    Sapphire skies
    stars so high
    sweet lullabies
    moonlit nights
    twinkle lights
    meteorites

    Heaven sent
    cosmic event
    aura dreamt
    angelic intent
    spirits content

    A magical vase
    keeper of fantasies,
    fairy tales and
    kindred souls.

    her name Moonlight Fantasy

Amazing vase with much luminosity. Another masterpiece, my friend.

    1. I love this piece. For some reason when reading it I almost felt like I was at a poetry slam and I could hear the recitation in my head. You have managed to capture so many elements in the piece, a few of which I had not even considered.
Thank you for sharing this masterpiece and for participating. I always love it when your name shows up in these posts, because I know I am going to read a masterpiece 😉
I hope you are having a wonderful week, and thank you! Feeling humbled that you would write something like this about something I made.

    1. The Pandora story is pretty timeless, and I Look forward to seeing what you may come up with. I hope you are doing well.

  8. The colors of this vase make me think “Mercury – Home of Virgo.” The sun will soon enter into Virgo, so it is fitting for this later half of August. The planet Mercury rules both this Earth sign and the Air sign Gemini. In a mythological sense, Hestia the virgin goddess of hearth and home, along with Hermes the quick-witted, light-footed messenger of the gods, represent the dual sides of the reigning Mercury. Greek legends say in ancient times there were two standard fixtures for every home – at the front door there was a “herm”, or pillar, erected for the god Hermes, and inside, a heating hearth for the goddess Hestia. These contrasting deities – a trickster traveler on the constant move and the domestic queen of warmth and comfort – come together to form the mix of earthy and quicksilvered Mercury.

    1. Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment and reminding me of Hestia! She certainly is worthy of a vase in honour of her. I have actually been formulating a piece for Hermes. I do love the name you have suggested, so I really do appreciate the suggestion.
I hope you are having a good week!

  9. Earth, Wind, Fire

Earth, Wind, and Fire were born of Water and Moonlight. People wondered, “How could substance arise from the ephemeral? How was Earth born of Water ,or the Wind rise and blow from them? How could Fire come from Water nay the cool of the Moon?

As in myth, the answers lie before us. For is not the Babe born from the salty sea of its Mother’s Womb made ready in her Moontide? And the Child wrought of flesh and fire, coos an infant’s song on its Wind?

    1. This is a very beautiful piece of writing and I love how you reference the elements and the moon. Thank you so much for your idea for a name and your beautiful words! I hope you are having a good week so far!

    1. You are most welcome! It is my pleasure and thank you for participating in ‘Name that Vase’ and for all of your kind support. It means the world to me. Have a wonderful day!

  10. Hi! I think your work is beautiful. First timer here with your monthly naming shin-dig. Here we go…

    Her name: Innocent Girl

She’s pure with love and kindness
    Full of spirit and fun
    A little bit corky
    and a little bit un-done

    She’s sweet
    She’s beautiful
    She’s crazy too

    There’s nobody like her,
    not even you!

    1. The first timer put a smile on my face with your beautiful prose. You certainly captured the free spirit of the piece and of the experience of making raku! Thank you for participating! I hope you are having a wonderful week so far!

    1. Thank you for participating and your beautiful selection of a name. Stay safe and well!

  11. Glory regained

Oh Wow! the nature is finally honoured
we took it, exploited it and bothered.

how we will be able to recuperate,
for such a ruthless and immense hate

which we all spread over the years
now what is the use of flowing tears

the humanity is getting what they sowed
they took for granted for all that bestowed

at least now Arise, Awake and Act
as per God’s will and pact

stay home ,stay safe, be benign
once again nature has given us a chance to design.

  12. i would name it MORNING DEW.

    i wake up early morning
    with earnest yearning
    watch MORNING DEW
    sparkling on the flowers
    reclining on the pew.
    i get leisure and thrill.

    best regards
    Brij kaul
