Pottery ‘In Situ’

I hope everyone is having a fantastic summer. I wanted to share some pictures with everyone of my garden, and some pottery pieces in and around the studio.

Raku Owl and Red Door
A raku owl stands guard at a magical garden door.

A neighbour gave us this old door and we painted it red and put it in the garden to add some more colour and visual interest.

Raku Vase and Tiny Yellow Flowers
I saw some of these tiny yellow flowers on the ground and thought it might be neat to press some into the clay. Can anyone identify this plant?

The plant behind the vase came in with a rose bush that a friend divided, and now has been transplanted to a few places on the property. Does anyone know the name of this plant?

It has been a strange year weather wise in Nova Scotia, but we should have plenty of grapes to make wine and jam with, and lots of tomatoes for sauce and salsa!

Raku Vase and Buddha
Buddha is surrounded – by beauty.

The chives survive, though I need to catch up on my weeding!

Pit fired Pottery
Pit-fired Pottery in the studio.

I love the way this pottery looks behind the aged barn board that is behind my work bench in the pottery studio!

More raku vases out and about at the studio! I love the contrasts of the colours of these pieces when placed outside in situ.

Raku Vase & Clematis
A raku cherished vase and plant!

I love the flowers on this clematis plant. I am hoping to add a new clematis plant to an arbour I am building for the garden!

Some photos of the garden! So much goodness for the bees! The solar light in the middle belonged to an avid gardener who is no longer with us. I like to think that she is smiling somewhere that it is still in a garden.

Cat on tractor
Our handsome and wonderfully kind studio cat Onyx! I am not sure how he will feel when the tractor is moved into the garage in a couple weeks once I fix my shed for the tractor.

You can see the summer is in full swing here at the studio! So much inspiration from nature! Which vases or images did you enjoy most?

  1. I love your garden! I love placing pottery around where it peeks out from behind greenery. I have a couple of tree stumps on the side of my house surrounded by day lilies (and other sneaky growth that pops up). I found a tall, thin vase at a second hand shop for one stump, and an inherited round big blue pot (from who knows where) that sit on those stumps. They look casual and homemade, even if not by me. I would love wandering through your creations!

    1. Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful comment! It sounds like I you have a beautiful garden area to enjoy as well. I love that you were able to find some pieces and incorporate them around your property. I think that is magnificent!
I hope you are having a great week!

    1. Thank you so much Krishna for your kind comment. I hope you are having a wonderful week full of peace and love!

    1. Thank you! Love growing veggies here, it gives a new meaning to eating local 😉 That cat is a good little mouser for the studio! I hope you are having a wonderful week 😉

      1. You’re welcome. That’s great how you’re producing your own food. Certainly saves money and supermarket trips, am I right?

        Thanks and you, too!

      2. Absolutely! We can always find something in the garden that is ready that we can make a meal with 😉

  2. I like them all! Honestly!! As an avid gardener/photographer I find inspiration in photos such as yours. As for the yellow flowers…some kind of wildflower. That’s all I can tell you right now!

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words Holly! I really appreciate them. I am guessing they are a wildflower too … I may have to look into what they are. I hope you are having a great week so far!

  3. Oh, how lucky you are. How lovely, how true, how human and angelic is your garden with your creativity in pottery blooming amongst the plants and trees. Thank you for sharing a little slice of heaven on earth — in Nova Scotia, you lucky bum. Jealous and thankful to have found your posts.

    1. I am incredibly lucky for having such a nice comment to read and to be surrounded by nature. It is a blessing I enjoy every day! I hope you are well and surrounded by your own little piece of heaven. We all deserve that.

  4. I love the shot from your garden of the orange tiger lilies the most as they remind me of my mum, we had them outside of my childhood home. I’m fond of the teal vase against the purple flowers, I like how the the different colors swirl around and also iridesce, it is an amazing piece. I am also drawn to the owl next to the red door with its knowing look. Your work is stunningly beautiful. Your garden is also lovely.

    1. Thank you so much for your stunningly beautiful comment! I love those tiger lilies too! They remind me of my grandma and her beautiful gardens every time I see them and that makes me smile. How is your week going? I hope you are having a great one and enjoying it!

  5. How to choose a photo so difficult? Your pieces of pottery enhance the garden giving it a fairy quality. The Yellow flowered bush, I am not sure but looks like what we used to call a buttercup bush. Love cats, I can imagine how he will not like one of his favourite places to be locked away.

    1. Thank you for your words! I am working on making the garden a magical place so I really appreciate your description! I also love your name for that bush, so if you do not mind, I think that is what I am going to call it from now on 😉 The cat has a little door to get into HIS tractor. I only borrow it 😉

I hope you are having a beautiful day in your part of the world!

      1. Pleased you are using the bush name, Buttercup. I love cats have 2 and they run things, had to laugh at the cat but really should not. In all seriousness HE owns the tractor and you borrow it when he vacates it. Take care and you also have a day full of miracles.

      2. We have 2 cats here! One runs the house and the other runs the studio. The cat in the house has his own chair (s) … I joke that they are his towers of power. LOL I hope your day is full of beauty and miracles 😉

    1. Thank you! I can totally see what you are saying and I love the comparison. I hope you are having a fantastic day!

  6. Gosh, you know it’s hard for me to choose–I’m spellbound by most of your gorgeous raku vases, and the owl is quite intriguing too! I really got the feel of your garden from the photos–welcoming, peaceful, alive, kind and nurturing. I always gravitate toward the blue pieces…the one sort of turquoise vase near purple flowers–is there a painted scene on that vase, or are my old eyes deceiving me? Anyway, it’s so beautiful. I’m just constantly awed <3

    1. Thank you so much for all of your kind words and thoughts you shared. I am happy that you enjoyed the photos of the garden. It is forever a work in progress it seems!
That particular piece is a result of using a few different glazes and techniques with the hopes of achieving a scene, so I am really glad you noticed that!
I hope you are well and enjoying writing and perhaps a piece of that mouthwatering lasagna 😉

      1. Thanks for revealing the secret to the scenery in that piece–I’m blown away by it from a distance, can only imagine what it would be like to see it up close. I’m doing pretty well for an old gal, thank you–love writing, and hoping to get in more reading this summer 🙂

      2. I am glad to hear you have been doing well and that you are loving the words you are creating. You have a way of making them very beautiful! The pieces are interesting that they can look different from various angles and lighting.
Hope your week is off to a wonderful start!

    1. Thank you so much Irene! We try to grow some of our food here and those grapes will become jam and wine! The tomatoes are destined to be sauce and salsa 😉 Hope you are well.

  7. You have a wonderful place! I’m a bit jealous your clematis is still blooming! I have no idea what your yellow flowers are. I have an ap that lets me take a photo and it gives me suggestions…or at least a place to start looking for the correct ID.

    1. Thank you for your kind comment. I may have to get an app like that! The clematis may still be blooming because it only gets partial sun? I am not sure.
I hope you are having a great week!

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words Eugenia! Onyx is loved by everyone who meets him. He is a very special guy! I hope you are having a wonderful day!

    1. Thank you so much for your kind comment and always happy to share my garden xox

  8. Tomatoes! they taste so much better when they’re from your own garden! Sometimes I chop green grapes – when they’re no longer bitter but just sour – for the salad!

    1. Indeed they do, and so many more varieties you can grow than are in the store! I will have to try a sour grape in my salad sometime, it could be nice. Is there a particular way you dress your salad when you include it?

  9. LOVE the pictures (the turquoise vase and clematis…!, but also the owl and red door, the greenish vase in the shade, etc)! The yellow flower is Winter Aconite. Check it out at

I’m loving seeing your garden….lovely earthy textures, vivid color, natural growth, all set off by the glossy, natural and very earthy vases. Very cheery, serene, fun!

    1. Thank you so much for your very kind words! I really appreciate you helping me to identify that plant! It came in with another plant from a friend who was dividing plants, so I had no idea what it was. The garden is a work in progress, each year and I am typically adding to it and putting in more plants. It is my serene happy space for sure!

  10. Hello there, I love your work and have followed you! Also, are you at all open to teaching private pottery lessons someday? If so, please do let me know, I’m brand new to pottery and very much want to learn.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words. I am open to teaching private pottery lessons. Where are you located? What got you interested in pottery?

    1. Thank you so much for your kind and encouraging words! I hope your week is off to a great start and that you have a wonderful day!

  11. ahh it’s winter where we are 🙁 we are currently being hit with a polar blast so it is not much fun but Hey! your pottery makes me feel better 🙂

    1. Thank you for the kind comment about my pottery. We have had some cool nights lately and I have a feeling this coming winter we are going to get hit by some of those polar blasts too! Hopefully the polar cold has lifted or will soon!

    1. Thank you so much Judy! I am glad you enjoyed those pieces and I do hope you have a great weekend!

    1. Thank you so much for your kind comment. I really enjoy seeing your flowers and bees. They are such beautiful and essential creatures. Plus you get honey! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

    1. They can really enhance the beauty of a garden. It is also good incentive to keep up on my weeding so they can remain visible!
