Mother of Dragons

So I had to pinch myself just a little bit when this vase emerged from the ashes of the raku process!

‘Mother of Dragons’ prior to glazing.

Before I reveal this raku piece, please take a moment to check out some of the submissions and creative writing for our ‘Name that Vase’ – Reader’s Choice Edition’. I am asking my readers to select their favourite name for this piece. Please help and vote for your favourite name(s), please like the comment that best captures the spirit of the vase for you.

In honour of the return of ‘Game of Thrones’ this vase is named ‘Mother of Dragons’ after Daenrys Targaryen. Motherhood is always challenging, but imagine trying to raise three willful dragons. The daycare costs alone must cost a fortune and imagine trying to hire a nanny, though Arya may be a suitable candidate, and possible future sister-in-law.

This art piece commemorates the magic of dragons. You can see where the flames have touched this vase during the reduction process. This moment has been captured perfectly and I can see a correlation between where the flames kissed the vase and the patterns on the vase. It was like our dragon friend Viserion was present in spirit before his icy reanimation.

You can see more detailed photos of this vase here, and feel free to check out more of our raku vases, here.

Are you looking forward to the final season of “Game of Thrones’? Any working theories on the future of Westeros or Daenrys? And what do you think of my fiery creation?

  1. Beautiful vase. I have never seen Game of Thrones (we don’t have TV). But I love dragons. We call Najar, one of our black kitties, “Night Fury” after Toothless, the black Night Fury dragon in “How to Train Your Dragon”. I’ve only seen the first film in the Dragon series, but Toothless demonstrated much cat-like behavior in the first film.

    1. Thanks for your kind words! That is a very sweet nickname for your cat! I am really glad our cat here does not have the ability to breathe fire. Everything would be singed 😉

  2. It is beautiful. My favorite dragon quote is “never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for thou art crunchy and taste good with ketchup” 😛

  4. This is a beautiful piece! FYI: I’ve never watched Game of Thrones, don’t really know anything about it except, from comments I’ve heard over the years, there seem to be regular character die-offs. In any case, “the magic of dragons” immediately captured my imagination and “Mother of Dragons” is such a great fit.

    1. I find the show to be very fast paced with lots of twists and turns. The dragons in the show are pretty amazing and I am looking forward to learn their fates and that of those in Westeros 😉 Thank you for your kind words. I hope you are having a great weekend!
