Throwing on the Wheel & Vase Named

Interested in seeing a potter in action, creating a vase on the wheel? In this video I spin the clay around, kind of like a record, and create a beautiful vase for a raku firing. You can see the finished vase if you scroll down a little!

Working on the pottery wheel.

I recently fired this piece that I threw in the video and here are some photos of the finished raku pottery vase:

And speaking of vases, you might remember my ‘Name that Vase’ post a short time ago, where I asked people to suggest a name and include a story for this vase below:

You can now read the story and find out the name that I have chosen for this vase here!

A special thank you to Marcia(and Missy & Rocky from Big Food, Big Garden, Big Life for writing a story that I could not help but absolutely love, and to all of the wonderful name suggestions, poems, writing and stories, which you can read here.

What do you think of the vase that I threw on the wheel? And are there any things you would be interested in seeing me make on the pottery wheel?

    1. Thanks so much for your kind words. I love the blue colour. I hope your week is off to a great start!

      1. That is a spectacular idea! I have not thought about that in a long time, but I thin you might be seeing some yarn bowls before the spring has past! Thanks for the great idea!

  1. I loved watching the video. A story in the bible is relevant. From the book of Jeremiah. “This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 “Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give you my message.” 3 So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. 4 But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.” ………Blessings always. Love your work.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words. I can see why such a powerful metaphor would have been chosen, as pottery is all about transformation. When we open our hearts and minds we can be shaped by our experiences and the Divine into the best version of ourselves. I hope you have a beautiful week. Thanks for stopping by!

    1. Humm. I posted a comment letting you know how flattered Missy is that you chose Rokonlélek as the name for your vase, but don’t see it. In any case– Missy is just bursting with pride! Thank you!

      1. I just got both of your comments! We are flattered that Missy wrote such a beautiful piece for the vase! You are very welcome!

    2. Thanks for your kind comment. If I recall correctly, this piece probably took me 20 – 30 minutes to throw due to the shape being a little more complex.

  2. Can’t seem to comment on the other post but I must tell you, Missy, Rocky & I are so flattered that you chose “Rokonlélek” as the name for your lovely vase! Missy is just bursting with pride! (She fancies herself quite the patron of the arts, as you know.) Thanks again!

    1. You are very welcome! That makes me smile, as did your story 😉 Everyone here at the studio loved it! We are also big fans of Missy and Rocky 😉 I hope all of you have a wonderful week! Thanks again for the fantastic and heart warming piece of writing!

    1. Thank you so much for your kind comment. I am glad you enjoyed watching it. I hope you have a wonderful week.

  3. wow, it is healing my energy just by looking at it. I wonder the powers it releases if it were to be in my hands! i would love to see you make a UFO or an Alien vase sometime. I’ll start saving up.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words! Making a UFO could be lots of fun. I actually made a small alien head before, but I really like the idea of making an Alien vase 😉 Stay tuned, it is bound to happen 😉 I hope you have a great week ahead!

  4. I was just thinking if you ever do a UFO theme you could do all the famous sightings. It would be cool to see a phoenix lights inspired vase all abstract looking and a Roswell crash would be nice too.

    1. I think that is an extremely cool idea! I am going to give that some serious thought in terms of the shapes, colours and effects. Thanks for the idea.

    1. Thank you so much for your very kind comments! I really love that blue too, very simple and classic. Soft on the eyes. I hope you have a great week ahead.

  5. Beautiful! I love the glaze! I appreciate from potter friends how difficult it is to throw a globe with a neck like that and keep it graceful and symmetrical. So it’s quite impressive! Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words! It took me awhile before I could throw a goblet. I had not tried in a few months and then one day it all just clicked. I hope you have a great week 😉

  6. Oh my! I am seeing the verse, “I am the potter, you are the clay” in a new light! I am so happy to be molded by Him… and would feel so safe in your capable hands. I loved the comment, “… pottery is all about transformation. When we open our hearts and minds we can be shaped by our experiences and the Divine into the best version of ourselves.” I am so ready to be molded.

    1. Thank you so much for your extremely kind words! The best part of having willingness to be transformed and be shaped and molded into a better self, is that is always happening with each day! What a great and beautiful journey and gift! Like your kind comment! I hope you have a wonderful week ahead!

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words! I have some more curves coming in my next vase post a little later today 😉 I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
